Ingredients

Full bread stick recipe with instructions can be found in the recipe card.

  • Bread dough. I use my dinner roll recipe but you can use store-bought bread dough too.
  • Basil pesto.
  • Parmesan cheese. Any hard cheese can be substituted. Pecorino Romano, Gruyere or Grana Padano are good options.
  • Flaky sea salt.
  • Melted butter.

How to make twisty bread sticks

  1. Make the dough: If making your own, make the dough by combining by blooming your yeast in some warm water with sugar. Once foamy, combine the yeast mixture with flour and salt and knead until a soft, smooth dough forms. Cover the dough and allow to rise for an hour or two until doubled in size.
  2. Form the bread sticks: Once the dough has risen, roll out onto a lightly floured surface until approximately 1cm thick. Spread the basil pesto over the dough then add the grated cheese and season with a pinch of flaky sea salt. Slice the dough into 2cm/1inch wide strips with a pizza cutter or sharp knife. Twist each piece of dough then place on a parchment paper lined baking sheet. Allow the bread sticks to proof for 30 minutes.
  3. Bake: Place the bread sticks in the oven and allow to bake for 10-15 minutes until golden brown and risen. Remove from the oven and immediately brush with melted butter. Allow to cool for 10 minutes then serve.

Can I make bread sticks ahead?

The dough can be made up to a day in advance and kept in the fridge. The breadsticks can be formed then covered well and refrigerated overnight before baking.
